Cheap Heat: "There ain't no friends in the rasslin' business" by Gene Jackson

This week's 'Cheap Heat' column looks at an old cliche' in wrestling......

I know everyone here who has read a wrestling book or watched a 'shoot interview' has heard workers say "there ain't no friends in the rasslin' business" or the more educated say "there aren't any friends in the wrestling business".  I guess in some cases that's true as there are some very shady people in the business who will screw over and steal from people they consider "friends" or  in some cases family.  However it's been my experience that for every scumbag in the wrestling business there's plenty of other people who are good genuine people.

For me personally, I stay in contact more with my friends I've made in the wrestling business than the ones I made outside of it.  Perhaps it's just that we have more in common.  You talk to old friends from childhood or school and seems once you catch up on things there's not much else there to talk about, your lives go different directions and there's not much common ground.  With my wrestling friends there's always something going in the business to talk about or stories of the "old days".  It's so crazy to me, that I can literally go ten years without seeing some of these guys and we end up on a show together and it's like we just saw each other last week.  That's really cool and it's a big part of what I enjoy about working shows these days....it's not just about going to the ring and wrestling but I also enjoy getting to hang out with old friends in the back and having some laughs as well as making new friends along the way.

The past two IPW shows especially have been fun, no egos....no bullshit....just a bunch of guys who wanna have fun and put on a good show for the fans.  It's the most laid back, stress free show I've been around in years, and I don't mean that as a knock on any of the other shows I've worked it's just a very different atmosphere...maybe because it's in a bar and the boys are all half lit and no one is offended by it....but whatever it is, it's really great and I hope IPW is around for years to come.  So if your a worker reading this and you've got friends in the business that you know have your back, you should appreciate that because the vets are right, it's hasn't always been that way and it's really cool to know that despite all the negatives about the wrestling business these days there are a few positives.   Now if your a worker reading this and your the type of person who will stab people in the back and cause drama because you somehow think it will get your further up the fictional "ladder" in the independents and somehow make you a "star"....do everyone a favor and get the hell outta the business...it's assholes like you that suck the fun out of it for everyone else and end up giving everyone a bad name.

If your one of these promoters who are only in the business in hopes of raping it for a few bucks and screwing over the guys who work hard in the ring to make you that money....GET THE HELL OUT!!....find another way to steal....go rob convenience stores or start pyramid schemes online or some shit.....quit soiling the name of our already damaged "sport".....and for the love GOD, quit trying to steal money from the few FANS that are left by promising them things you can't deliver...if you say your gonna have a wrestler there ...have THEM there!  Not a "lookalike" or some other crooked shit that turns them against wrestling....again if your looking to steal people's money there's more effective ways to do it.....QUIT KILLING THE WRESTLING BUSINESS WITH YOUR LIES AND SCHEMES! You know who you are and I hope kharma bites you in the ass for all the crap you've pulled in recent years.

So again...like I said earlier...there are some good people in the wrestling business...and I'm proud to call many of them my friends...and on the flip side there are some people I'm ashamed to have ever dealt with.....but like everything in life you take the good with the bad.....and hope in time the good wins out....

Thanks for reading....and thanks to everyone whose been checking out the site regularly....I think we have some good things going on here with the news, columns, the youtube channel, and of course the radio show....if you have any suggestions for cheapheatradio.com....ways to improve?, things you'd like to see or things you don't like....email me at genejackson95@gmail.com
